Encaustic, candle wicks, textile on wood panel

On October 27, 2018 46-year-old Robert Gregory Bowers shot and killed 11 Jews worshipping at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburg. This painting is made of Encaustic, which is bees' wax mixed with tree resin. There are 12 candle wicks embedded in the wax, 11 representing the lives lost and the 12th being the Shamash, as in the extra Shamash candle in the 9-candle candelabrah used for the 8-night Hannukah festival. The stars at the base of each candle were cut from a US military internment flag.
